Czeslaw Milosz at MusicSources

Several years ago Czeslaw Milosz came to MusicSources to read his poetry, translated by Robert Hass. He had never heard a harpsichord. He was surprised and delighted and spoke of his passion for Bach. The following poem was given to us by him after his visit. It is unpublished and hangs in our library in his own hand along with the version you see below.

Mavet, mors, viris, thanatos, smrt,
And thus it ends, the state of affairs,
All I used to list as my own.
And thus it ends, the state of mind.
Absolute cold. How will I pass through that door?
I search for what is most strongly opposed to smrt.
And I think it is music. Of the Baroque.
